Whooee!

Today we rode from Clifden to Carna, taking the longer route through Ballyconneely and Roundstone. Despite trying to game the weather using radar apps, we got wet within about an hour of leaving. But the downpour didn’t last too long. It was tolerable, not being too cold, and with all the breeze we dried out surprisingly well within a few minutes.

The wind kicked up after we passed through Cashel and I’m not gonna lie, it was a tough go for the remainder of the ride. The wind whipped in all directions. The crosswinds are scariest for me, the head-ons hardest. When the wind is at our backs, we hardly need to pedal!

We reached Carna by around 2pm and, after settling into our B&B, strolled into town only to discover there isn’t one. There is a convenience store (pub in back we later learned), a take-away pizza, and the Tigh Mheaic restaurant which is the only food game in town. Luckily, it’s good food and the young barkeep there gave The Hubs a proper pour (actually 2 of them) of Guinness.

The plan for tomorrow is to be driven with bikes to the Rossaveel terminal, where we’d be ferried to the Aran Island of Inishmore. We would ride around there returning in early evening to be driven back to Galway City. At the moment, I’m contemplating and researching alternatives.  As much as I’ve wanted to see Inishmore, it’s hard to imagine spending 5-6 hours, walking or riding, on what looks like an unprotected island in 20-40 mph winds.

Here's my video of the day.  We thought the man riding a bike behind these sheep was playing sheep-dog and trying to herd them. Turns out he was just another cyclist – a friendly guy from Hamburg, Germany with whom we had a friendly chat.

  1. Man, I am so sorry about the wind! I've got my fingers crossed for Inishmore. Maybe take a Lyft and at least see it?
